How to start your career as a software tester?

Hi there!
I guess it's time for me to start write some articles about software testing. As first, I think, it will be some article for fresh testers, about, how to get first job.
So, you are young specialist, maybe not so young, but fresh junior and you don't have any practical experience in testing, and all companies wants at least one year of experience. So, what to do in this case? Where to receive some exp? You can ask yourself - where I can get that 1 year if everyone want a year?
Answer is very simple, and if you are don't know it, hm, think again, or, you can read this article, of course.
Ok, you have some basic knowledge, but not work exp. Then, if you want to get it, you must look for open source projects and ask for a participation, or, you can look for other projects, not only for open source, and join them. This is a perfect solution for a junior tester! You can find these projects on different sites, forums or by friends. For example, you can look for these projects at GitHub, or CodePlex, or, at a lot of different resources, these two are just most popular, but you are free to choose. Next, you can practice your skills of testing by these projects and join to new, also it will be very hopeful to do some blogging, so a lot of people will know about you, and in what projects you are working on. As for me this is very easy and hopeful!
By the way, this is good idea not only for testers, but for a lot of others professions!
So, as you see, this is not a big article, but you got one, but very important advice from here, so, use it!

End of part 1 of my quest, move to tools for testing

One week have passed and I didn't write anything here, it's because I was bussy a little bit, you know - summer, vacations, etc. But I didn't stop to follow my plan. So, basics of Jira already acquired and now I can move to another step - to tools for software automation. I've choose Test Complete, but I think that I should add to my list also another framework - Selenium, which is open source and free. But I'll focus mainly on Test Complete, and Selenium will be my second tool for learning.
Also I'm practicing some Java, must mention that I know basic syntax of Java, but have some problems with more complex and advanced things like Generics, Collections etc, I think knowledge of Java will be very usefull for white box testing.
And for the end, here is some summarizing video of Jira.

Part 1 of my quest - Jira bug tracking tool

Hi there! As I promised yesterday, we'll continue our steps into world of software testing world with some taste of automation. In my yesterdays plan I said that first thing which we'll learn will be bug trucking tool - Jira.
Jira is not a small tool which you can learn by one day, it's quite big thing. So, we'll use next sources - Agile Jira tutorial is not bad one but if we want to learn all Jira that blog would be not enough, we'll need book, I choose this - Jira 4 Essentials. As you see here a little info about Jira, it's be cause all these links are enough for me, and if you'll want more information - just google it.
And now let's go to school :) I meant, let's learn new about Jira from our or other sources. After a few days I hope I'll finish learning of Jira, will write some kind of report about it and we'll move to test automation tool.

Way to become a software automation tester

Some time have passed since my previous posts about testing, now I already finished my studies at University and have some extra time for learning new things, things about software testing, of course.
I will not write a lot of texts about manual testing, but we mast keep in mind that this big part of testing is also very important, especially for beginners. You can find all needed info in Cem Kaner's books, especially in this one, so now I can move on with more advanced things - automated testing.
But first I need to tell you that this is not a typical tutorial for all, for most this is tutorial for me, for my steps and sources of some knowledge, which you can also use in your own way.
So, automated testing is cool, but we also need to know some basic thing and tools. Which are they?
I could be wrong, but I thing that this is a bug trucking software, frameworks for test automation, some scripting language and basic knowledge of protocols and OS's.
My choice was putted on Jira bug tracking tool, Test Complete for automated testing and Jscript for scripting language for Test Complete, as OS of course will be Windows, be cause Test Complete works only in Win based operation systems. All other stuff will be included on the way and for now that's all.
So, this is my basic set of tools maybe they are now good for me in my current status, I don't know it, but I'll try them and than will give you some feedback about each tool and you could choose what you like and want. And in few days I'll post some tutorials for each tool.

Oracle vs all programmers world!

Hi there! Didn't write nothing here for a long time, and this could continue if I wouldn't read this article today.
To be honest I don't want to write my opinion here about this issue, because I'm not sure in my English skills for this, in many cases important issue, so I just put a link and you can read it and decide for yourself things about Oracle's strategy and plans for java's future.

Introduction to Agile

As you know, it's also very important to know not only programming and testing technics, but to know development methodologies!
And here is a good intro to Agile methodology:
Of course only this video will not be enough to understand all principles of Agile methodology, so, you'll need to read some books, blogs and other information about this methodology.

One month ago I wrote about Testers Lviv UA, our local testers community, but then they had only a few videos. So, now guys did a good job and made an update of whole site and add new videos to their youtube's channel. So, now you can check it out. But it all still in Russian/Ukrainian, hope, maybe some day they'll have some English videos.
P.S. Hey, guys from Testers Lviv UA, why you named your videos in English and all speaches are in Russian, maybe will be better if names will be in same language, no?

If you want to try some Rails

Ok, I'm not a big fan of Ruby, actually I more prefer Python, but some time ago I was interested in this language. I will not say that Ruby is good or worse than Python, everyone should decide it for themselves. Now I want to propose to you one site where you can practise to write Ruby and Rails apps.
I hope everyone, who reads this post already knows what is Rails, if not, you should visit this site and if you even don't know what is Ruby - visit this site - Try Ruby. For everyone else, please welcome.
So, if you are "zombie" and you like Rails, you definitely must look at Rails for Zombies. Here you can watch some Ruby and Rails tutorials and than practise to write learnt code to web-based Ruby editor and run your code. Just look at it and if you will like it you can also purchase their courses, unfortunately they are not free like Rails for Zombies.

Testers Lviv Ua

Recently I've found new youtube's channel about software testing - Testers Lviv Ua. Main language is Russian, so some of you, who don't know Russian this lectures will be useless, but if you know Russian you will find a lot of useful information!
This is a good beginning from our top companies, because many of lectures are working on that companies, for example two nice girls are working on Epam. Anyway, I thing that we must support this start, at least by posting theirs videos in our twitters or blogs, it will be sad if they will close this channel and will stop making such a great videos.

Move to practice...continue

Ok, I've spent some time with CodePlex but actually I didn't get what I was need. Anyway, I made some localization for one project, will give a link when localized version will be released. Also I have, and I guess that not only I, problems with joining to new projects as almost no one needs a tester in a team, some times even automated testers can't find a projects for themselves.
Still nothing on Github, but I must say that I didn't look closer for them.
Now, I want tell to some of you important thing:

  1. If you want to find a project for testing, you must search for it, don't wait that some developers will ask you for a favor to test their apps, it's you you must ask them for that kind of favor also you must interested them in something, coz why they must "hire" you if you just like others 100 "green" testers?
  2. Probably you could start some simple project and begin to test it be yourself and invite some beginner tester, like you are.
  3. Not bad idea to find some "dead" of frozen project and test it
  4. But in most of cases you should go to some testers courses and gain additional or general knowledge about testing, but this's not our way, because we want to made all of it be ourselves.
And continue to read books and sites about testing, this is a good idea to keep you in shape!

Move to practice!

Ok, for now I read a lot about software testing and I feel that I need to move on, so I decided to take a part at testing some software. I created account at Microsoft's CodePlex and already send a request for some projects. For now I'll not say much about them, because one of them is a half dead, I guess and another one is live but I didn't get an invitation, so I'll wait a while and, maybe, look for other projects. Also I've account at Github but I didn't look there. So, maybe someone of you knows some live projects, which needs a tester or, maybe a translator (Ukrainian/Russian - fluent) I'd like to take a part in their development! So, that's all for now. Good luck! P.S. From this time I'll write only in English! I know, my English is not perfect but how can I improve it if I'll not write on it? Hope it's not so bad :)
